This may come as a surprise to most people but hospital food has been bad mouthed for a long time… rubbery chicken or boiled beef… under done potatoes or over done peas, pudding - vintage 1949.
But here’s the thought… the alternatives available, starvation diet, not needing to eat because you aren’t there, not nearly as appetizing.
As I sit here waiting on my third heart surgery in as many weeks, NPO (nothing passed orally - no food or water), I can imagine that strained rice soup after a day of not eating might be better than (ok, almost as good as) embalming fluid after a day of not breathing.
If you take the worst cook in the world, they probably already work in some institutional kitchen someplace, but they are still a better host than the mortician.
